Local friends, neighbors, business people, civic workers all gathered at Kunes Country Chevrolet-Cadillac to give the gift of life on 7/15 from 9:30AM till 3:30PM, during a Blood Drive for Liam Wester. Liam was recently diagnosed with a cancer condition called “neuroblastoma”. His mother Lindsey Wester stated Liam has a tough road ahead of him, but is hopeful of an eventual recovery. The event was coordinated by Malorie Perez and Lisa Conrad of Kunes Country Chevrolet-Cadillac, in conjunction with the American Red Cross. Their showroom was cleared of cars to make room for dozens of registration booths, donor cots (for blood draws) and blood sorting stations by American Red Cross staff. The goal of 100 donors was set in advance and 91 usable units of blood were donated in the final count. Chevrolet-Cadillac General Manager Bruce Peach stated, ”I was very impressed with the turnout for Liam and the blood drive in general. Our showroom was packed almost all day. Overall the event was extremely successful!”. Malorie Perez added, “The crowd was amazing and was almost entirely promoted by word of mouth and social media, including Facebook and Twitter.”
Scott Kunes of Kunes Country of Elkhorn was named one of Automotive News’ 40 Under 40. This annual recognition program honors 40 high achievers at new-car dealerships who are under 40 years old.
Automotive News evaluated nominations from across the U.S and Canada and identified the top performers in a large field of high caliber talent at dealerships. These dynamic employees were profiled in the July 14 issue of Automotive News, the leading weekly publication of the auto industry.
Scott Kunes initially was reluctant to join the family business, which has seven dealerships in Wisconsin and Illinois. In fact, after starting out in the usual entry-level jobs, he left the auto industry entirely.
“At the time I was working cleaning the shop floors or as a porter. Everybody told me I was doing a great job, but I thought, ‘I don’t want to work here.’ So I started working in restaurants. I worked my way up, and cooked my way through college. Eventually I picked up my certification in the Classic French culinary area” in 2003 from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Minneapolis/St. Paul, he said.
After working in different parts of the country and feeling “burned out” from the food service industry, he returned home. He decided to “help out” at a dealership, “and it kinda stuck.”
Just more than a year ago, the dealership group took over two adjacent stores in Elkhorn, Wis., which it has renamed Kunes Country Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram and Kunes Country Chevrolet-Buick-GMC. When the dealership group acquired the stores, their combined new- and used-vehicle sales averaged 59 units a month. In May, combined sales were a record 126, with June sales on a pace to hit 140, he said in mid-June.
For most of that time, he was the dealership group’s used-car director, posting record used-car sales in 2012 and 2013. After putting extra time and effort into the new stores, “getting them up to speed,” he became general manager for the two stores in January.
He has applied skills he learned in food service to the car business.
“The culinary career helped out in my used-car department for sure,” he said. “That’s not to say they’re that similar, but there are a lot of things you learn, like stocking, rationing, purchase ordering — that kind of stuff you learn in culinary arts.”
He said the hectic pace in running a restaurant also taught him crisis-management skills and how to think on his feet.
“When you’re in the weeds, there’s so much stuff right in front of you, you don’t even realize it, but you’re stuck in the weeds,” he said. “You kinda need to step back and think about what’s your next move.”

On Sunday Junes 1st, some lucky customer of Kunes Country of Elkhorn participated in the “Ryan Braun Experience” at Miller Park. The event included customers that had bought vehicles at Kunes Country of Elkhorn in May, whose names were drawn in a raffle. The winners got VIP access to Miller Park, go onto the field for batting practice, sit in the Brewers dugout, meet Ryan Braun, get photos and autographs, then watch the Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs game from Braun’s private suite. As an unexpected bonus, former All-Star pitcher Yovani Gallardo came out and joined in on the “meet n’ greet” as well. Ryan Braun started the game with a 1st inning home run the gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead over the visiting Chicago Cubs. The Brewers went on to post a 9-0 shutout of the Cubs before a “sold out” crowd. A lifetime of memories were had by all !!
